Kela does not provide direct reimbursement for treatment. Kela reimbursements for orthodontic treatment performed in the private sector are available only in rare, exceptional cases, and it is possible to apply for them retroactively from Kela. Even in such cases, the share of Kela reimbursements in larger dental treatment packages is relatively small.

Once the teeth are no longer subjected to the straightening forces of orthodontic appliances, they tend to gradually shift back toward their original position. For this reason, retention—or maintenance treatment—is used after orthodontic treatment to prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions. This usually involves a retention wire attached to the inner surface of the teeth, nighttime retention plates, or both.
