Does orthodontic treatment hurt? A specialist dentist answers

I underwent orthodontic treatment as an adult. It’s definitely a story worth its own blog post, but because of my own adult orthodontic treatment, in addition to the hundreds of orthodontic treatments I’ve performed, I also have an answer to an important and recurring question from patients during consultations: “Does this treatment hurt?”

Pain is always a personal experience. However, if you’re promised completely pain-free orthodontic treatment, that may not necessarily be entirely true. For children and adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment, removable appliances are sometimes used, which can be completely pain-free, but orthodontic treatment for adults is very rarely pain-free. In fact, orthodontic treatment almost always causes sensations that can be described as a throbbing, pain, aching, or at least a feeling of pressure.

In my consultations, I always strive to be open about what to expect from orthodontic treatment and what we can do to make the experience as pleasant as possible and avoid any unpleasant surprises.

What kind of pain can orthodontic treatment cause?

In orthodontic treatment, controlled force is applied to the teeth to move them into the correct position. This may initially cause mild soreness or discomfort, especially in the early stages of treatment or when the braces are adjusted or the aligners are changed. The sensation is not constant but usually subsides within a few days. Most people describe the sensation more as “pressure” than pain.

How can you relieve the pain associated with orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is a joint effort, so you’re not alone in how you feel. You can effectively relieve any discomfort using the following methods:

  • A mild pain reliever (e.g., ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as needed
  • Eating soft foods during the first few days after the device is adjusted
  • Orthodontic wax, if your mouth feels irritated
  • Adequate rest and careful oral hygiene, which help with adjustment

Why does the experience of pain during orthodontic treatment vary from person to person?

Everyone reacts differently. For some, the sensation is almost imperceptible; for others, it is more noticeable at first. The experience is influenced by factors such as age, the need for tooth movement, and individual pain sensitivity. The most important thing to know is that this sensation is a normal part of the treatment—it indicates that the teeth are actually moving and that the treatment is progressing.

Why is orthodontic treatment worth it, despite the potential discomfort?

Orthodontic treatment is always an investment in the future. Temporary discomfort is part of the process, but the result improves your bite, makes it easier to clean your teeth, and supports both your health and appearance for the rest of your life. When treatment is carried out under the supervision of an experienced specialist dentist, any potential difficulties remain under control and the end result is safe and long-lasting.

Safe orthodontic treatment in the hands of a skilled specialist

Orthodontic treatment can feel uncomfortable at times, but that shouldn’t stop you from starting treatment. My job is to make sure we go through every step together and safely. Most people are surprised by how quickly they get used to the treatment—and how wonderful it is to see their smile change day by day.
