A natural tooth is never a single color or a uniformly gray block. The inner part of the tooth (dentin) is naturally more yellowish and less translucent, while the outer layer (enamel) is translucent to varying degrees, refracts light, and has a vibrant appearance.
When a missing part of a tooth is reconstructed using separate aesthetic layered resins, the dentist does not simply “fill a cavity,” but acts like a sculptor. A natural-looking result is achieved by applying layers of resin, each just a fraction of a millimeter thick, to the tooth; their shades, light-refracting properties, and translucency match your natural teeth as closely as possible.

How does the treatment process proceed?
Cosmetic dental treatment using layered composites is a comfortable and generally completely painless procedure for the patient, which can be completed in a single visit.
1. Design and Color Selection:
Together, we’ll discuss your goals for your smile. If you’d like your teeth to appear lighter overall, we recommend teeth whitening before the composites are placed. Your dentist will select several different shades and levels of translucency that are tailored specifically to your teeth.
2. Tooth preparation:
Unlike with porcelain veneers, aesthetic composite restorations generally require very little, if any, grinding of the natural tooth. Usually, it is sufficient to create a small bevel at the tip of the tooth. The tooth’s surface is cleaned and treated with bonding agents to ensure that the composite adheres firmly to it.
3. Layering and Shaping:
The dentist builds up the shape of the tooth layer by layer. Each layer is cured separately using a special blue light. At this stage, the internal shades and surface anatomy of the tooth are created.
4. Finishing and mirror-like polish:
Finally, the layered area is polished to fit the bite, and natural micro-textures are created on the surface to reflect light correctly. A multi-step, high-quality polishing process ensures that the plastic feels as smooth on the tongue as natural enamel and effectively resists staining.

In standard dental fillings with composite resin (for example, when repairing a cavity in a back tooth), only one base shade is typically used, and the goal is purely functional. Aesthetic layering composites use several specialized resins with different light-transmission and color properties (e.g., opaque dentin shades and translucent enamel shades). This technique requires significantly more time, detailed shaping, and multi-step polishing to ensure that the restoration blends invisibly with the natural tooth in the anterior region.
The service life of laminated plastics is typically about 5–8 years, and often even longer with proper care. As a material, plastic is slightly softer than the tooth’s natural enamel or ceramic materials (such as porcelain laminates), so it wears down and loses its luster over time. However, a major advantage of aesthetic resin is that it can be easily repaired, added to, or polished at any time without having to replace the entire restoration.
Modern, high-quality composite plastics resist staining well, as long as they are carefully polished. However, plastic is more porous than ceramic materials, so heavy consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco can, over time, cause stains in the seams of the plastic-coated area and also on the surface as it becomes rougher with wear. Regular visits to a dental hygienist and gentle repolishing of the composite resin effectively remove these surface stains.
The choice depends primarily on the initial situation:
- Laminated plastics are completed in a single visit, and there’s little need to grind down your natural teeth. They’re easy to repair, but their lifespan is somewhat shorter, and they’re more prone to staining. They’re also generally a more affordable option.
- Ceramic veneers (porcelain) are the most durable option. They often last 10–15 years and do not stain as easily. However, they require more tooth preparation before placement, the treatment involves at least two visits (since they are fabricated in a dental laboratory), and the cost is higher.
Generally speaking, yes, provided your mouth is otherwise healthy. Before undergoing cosmetic treatment, any gum inflammation or cavities must be treated. If you suffer from severe teeth grinding (bruxism), the risk of the resin chipping is higher than usual. In this case, we recommend wearing a night guard to protect the results of your cosmetic dental treatment, just as you would your natural teeth.
