Dental veneers and dental crowns

A dental veneer is a thin ceramic shell placed on the visible surface of a front tooth. It can be used to improve the appearance of teeth, repair wear and tear, correct misalignment or discoloration, and increase the durability of a tooth that has undergone extensive composite restoration, for example.

A dental crown replaces a large portion of the tooth, whereas a dental veneer mainly covers the parts of the tooth that are visible from the outside. A dental crown is placed over the tooth’s own root. If the tooth root is also severely damaged, it must be replaced with a dental implant, onto which the crown (a new ceramic tooth) is placed.

Dental veneers and crowns can be fabricated either individually or in batches, which allows for more extensive aesthetic treatment and bite correction. The need for and scope of treatment must always be assessed on an individual basis and carefully planned before any treatment begins.

We aim to perform treatments in a way that causes as little damage to the natural tooth structure as possible (minimally invasive), but this depends on the tooth’s original condition and the desired aesthetic outcome. The more extensive the damage or fillings in the tooth, the more of the natural tooth must be replaced with ceramic in order to achieve the desired durable and aesthetic treatment result.

The average lifespan of dental veneers and crowns is approximately 10–20 years. However, this is greatly influenced by the level of oral hygiene and factors such as a strong bite and bruxism (teeth grinding). Careful oral hygiene, regular checkups, and, if necessary, the use of a bite guard significantly extend the durability of your natural teeth as well as ceramic and other fillings.

Diet also plays a significant role in the overall picture: acidic beverages and foods, as well as excess dietary sugar, significantly increase tooth damage and thus shorten the lifespan of fillings.

Although veneers can correct minor misalignments of the teeth, the need for orthodontic treatment should be assessed before beginning treatment. Severe crowding should ideally be treated before the veneers are fabricated. This ensures that the teeth are positioned correctly on the dental arch and prevents slow but continuous crowding of the teeth. Orthodontic treatment also allows for less grinding of the teeth for the veneers, which improves the durability of the teeth. The shade of the teeth should also be assessed before starting treatment, and the teeth should be whitened if necessary—especially if the patient desires veneers that are significantly lighter than their natural teeth.
