Dentures offer a solution to the problems caused by lost teeth. There are many types of dentures and prosthetic solutions - these are briefly discussed in this article.
Fortunately, you don’t have to make the decision on your own—we’ll help you find the solution that best fits your situation. Select “Consultation (other than orthodontic treatment)” from the booking calendar. Consultations with our general dentists are free of charge.
Full dentures, the traditional "false teeth", are an easy and relatively inexpensive solution when a patient no longer has any teeth left in their mouth. They replace all the upper or lower teeth and fit snugly into the gum. Complete dentures are usually made of acrylic and are removed at night and for cleaning. They can provide a natural-looking smile and improve the patient's bite and speech. If even better stability and fit for full dentures is desired, a few dental implants can be placed in the jawbone to hold the dentures more firmly in place.
Partial dentures are used when the patient still has healthy teeth in their mouth, and replacing the teeth with dental implants (see below) would be unnecessarily expensive. These dentures attach by relying on your own teeth. Like full dentures, they are removable, making them easy to clean and repair if necessary. Partial dentures can be fully acrylic loose dentures, like full dentures, or more delicate "dentures with teeth", which attach to the teeth with metal structures. A ridge prosthesis is often a more hygienic solution, leaving the gum line of your own teeth and most of the mouth free. The fit of dentures is generally better than acrylic dentures.
When a tooth is damaged but its root and pulp are healthy, the visible parts can be restored with a dental crown or a veneer. Read more about crowns and veneers here.
When individual teeth are in such poor condition that they need to be extracted, they can be permanently replaced with dental implants, which are firmly anchored to the jawbone, or with a dental bridge supported by adjacent teeth. It is also usually possible to replace all teeth with dental implants. In such cases, it is not necessary to replace every lost tooth with its own implant; instead, all the teeth can be replaced with a bridge supported by at least four dental implants. Read more about implants and bridges here.
Before starting prosthetic treatment, your mouth must be otherwise healthy. So if you haven’t had a dental checkup in over a year, you should start with a checkup so that any cavities, gum disease, and other issues can be treated before prosthetic treatment begins.
If your teeth are otherwise in good health, you can book a consultation directly. Consultations with our general dentists are free of charge. (Any necessary X-rays will be billed separately.) Select “Consultation (other than orthodontic treatment)” from the appointment calendar. During the consultation, the dentist will assess which treatment option (crown, veneer, implant, bridge, or removable denture) is best suited for your case.
Treatment is usually planned using 3D scans and X-rays. This will create a prosthesis that best fits your mouth and smile. The design takes into account the patient's bite, oral anatomy and aesthetic requirements. You will receive a more accurate estimate of the total cost of treatment at the consultation.
Once the plan is approved, the dental prosthesis is prepared in the laboratory. It typically takes a couple of weeks for the dentures to be made.
We use modern manufacturing methods and durable, natural-looking materials that provide optimum comfort, durability and aesthetics. Ebeling Dentists has its own dental laboratory at our Ruoholahti office.
After completion, the prosthesis is fitted in the patient's mouth. During the fitting visit, the fit, colour, shape and bite of the denture are checked.
If necessary, the prosthesis can be adjusted and fine-tuned to ensure the best possible comfort and functionality. Your dentist will give you instructions for proper cleaning and maintenance of the prosthesis.
